Projects completed and ongoing projects

 

1. Development of Advanced Techniques in Mass Spectrometry applied to Environmental Analysis.

 

The project was aimed at modifying an ionization source for the development of the technique T & R-MIMS and its coupling to a mono quadrupole mass spectrometer. The main objective of this project was to expand the analysis of volatile organic compounds, which have been conducted very successfully by conventional MIMS technique for analysis of volatile and semi-volatile polar organic compounds. This new technique was also applied in environmental analysis and in monitoring of reactions. (complete) 1999

 

2. Structural characterization of biologically active peptides from the  venoms of social and solitary wasps, by liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry

 

Implementation of the technique in mass spectrometry for the detection, monitoring purification and sequencing of biologically active peptides extracted from venoms of social and solitary wasps. Tandem  mass spectrometry were implemented (especially where toxins are found in very low concentrations) and coupled to a liquid chromatographer. (Complete) 2001

 

3. Development of strategies for transformation of glycerol via biotechnological routes

 

The project aimed to develop strategies for the transformation of glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel production in products of higher commercial value. Despite of glycerol have a insdustrial use its amount higherthan the industry demand. This market saturation can generate an economic problem (low cost of the product) and a possible environmental problem (discarding), Thus, it is necessary to develop new technologies that add commercial value to glycerol.(Complete) 2008

 

4.  INCT-CEPEMA

 

The major goal of the proposed Center for Environmental Engineering is to develop novel and improve existing toxic waste treatment processes in order to achieve reliable environmental compliance at lowest possible cost. The center aims to address one of the major problems in the manner academia and industry tackle the development of technologies targeted at difficult to treat waste streams.(ongoing) 2009

 

5.  Recovery of degraded areas contaminated with metals

 

The project aims to collect micro-organisms adapted, present in degraded areas. These microorganisms will be cultured in the laboratory, and will have capacity of biosorption of metals tested. The microorganisms with the greatest potential for bioremediation will be identified by mass spectrometry and will be used both for decontamination of affected areas, and for concentration of metals for subsequent reuse. Besides the environmental benefit the project also has an economic benefit.

 

The project has four main objectives:

 

  • Design and build a proving ground for testing of remediation technologies for soil and water;

  • To systematize the search of microorganisms adapted to the contamination of soils / waters by heavy metals and oil;

  • implement the technologies of bioremediation microorganisms adapted;

  • Evaluation energy / economic technologies.(Ongoing) 2010

 

6.  Study of salivary metabolome, proteome and film: in patients with leukemia in childhood and adolescence and its association with tooth cavity.
