Mass Spectrometry Researcher

 

Maria Anita Mendes was born in Marilia, São Paulo, Brazil in 1968. Her first contact with chemistry was at the APEC High School in 1983. She was a trainee at Sanepar in Maringá, PR, for a year, during her graduate. She graduated in 1991 and obtained her MSc degree in Analytical Chemistry in 1994 at the State University of Maringá. She also obtained her Ph.D. degree in Analytical Chemistry in 1999 at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), after benefiting from visiting fellowships at the Thomson Laboratory and Odense University Denmark with Dr. Frants Lauritsen. She has extensive experience in mass spectrometry with modern separation methods, coupled with mass spectrometric detection, and with biochemical methodology. She was a post-doctoral research fellow at UNICAMP (new technologies for mass spectrometry analysis) and at the Paulista State University in Rio Claro, SP, Brazil (mass spectrometry characterization of wasp venom peptides) working in the Laboratory of Structural Biology and Zoochemistry  (LSBZ). At the present time she is an Alcoa Foundation fellow at the University of São Paulo (CEPEMA-USP) (Integrating Modern Analytical Methodologies into the Development of Sustainable Technologies) Dr. Mendes has published more than 45 papers and is the co-author of three patents, two of which received the  "Governor of the State of São Paulo" Patent Award .
